Ida was the eldest daughter, born to an immigrant German couple. She learned hard work at an early age and was a cooking assistant in a boarding house at the age of 9. She married Lewis Emery Castle on 18 Mar 1902 in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They had three sons, Lewis Jr. who died at birth, Ormal and Champlain. About 1910, they bought a little restaurant that they called Uneeda Lunch in South Milwaukee. Ida did the cooking and Lewis was the waiter and bookkeeper. Besides cooking, she loved her large garden.
