He was born and baptised in Chelsea and, per the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, died "at Tillechewan Castle in Dumbartonshire, whither he had gone to fulfil a preaching engagement. He was buried in the Dean cemetery, Edinburgh."

Tillechewan Castle is now in ruins, but was located in what is now Alexandria in West Dumbartonshire.

A grey granite obelisk was erected by his friends in the Dean Cemetery in Edinburgh Scotland to mark the place of interment.
