Earl was born October 25, 1912 to Edward and Josephine Johnson in Grilley Township, McHenry County, where he was reared and farmed as a young man. He married the former Elaine Smutzler on June 4, 1955 in Minot, ND. They farmed in Grilley Township and in Prescott Township, Renville County. In recent years they had lived in Minot. He was on the Renville County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Committee for many years, served on the Grilley Township board and belonged to the Farmers Union.
