He came from a family of public servants: his grandfather was Napoleon Broward, governor of Florida (1905-09) and U.S. Senator; his father served as a state senator and on the board of trustees at Tuskegee Institute; and his mother, the first female county commissioner in Alabama, was a noted genealogist and advocate for the Veterans Hospital. He received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Alabama, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity along with his twin brother, Neill. After graduating, he served as president of the Alabama Bar Association's Young Lawyers Section. Mr. Segrest worked in private practice with his father in Tuskegee for seven years before becoming Macon County prosecutor in 1963. In 1965, he took a position with the U.S. Attorney's office, Southern District. He was hired by the Middle District as a prosecutor in 1968 and remained there until his retirement 30 years later. Mr. Segrest was a member of the Federal Bar Association. He retired as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Segrest is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Julia, his brother Allan, his sister-in-law Beth (Neill) and infant twin brothers Alexander McCaskill Segrest and Thomas Bryant Segrest.
