He got up at sunrise and farmed which enabled him to give his legal services to those that were unable to pay.

Segrest served as the lawyer for Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) and was on the Board of Trustees for many years. He was well known as advocating for civil rights over many decades as a lawyer, a Christian, and a community leader against deep opposition. He was later featured in books, a tv movie Reaping the Whirlwind, and during national tv coverage during the integration of the Tuskegee Public Schools. Recently he has been included in The Tuskegee Civil Rights Museum. He served in the state legislature and brought in over a billion dollars of monies to serve the Veterans residing in the state of Alabama through his great persuasion.

He and his wife Florida were honored by the American Legion. He is deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
