Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company E, 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on September 7, 1864. Transferred to Company L, he served through the end of the war, and was honorably mustered out on June 29, 1865.

On June 8, 1881 he filed for a United States Army Pension (Application #423490, Certificate #249460). On On September 11, 1885 his wife, Rahoda Applegate, filed for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #330761, Certificate #218836).
