Samuel Treese, aged 80, a veteran employee of the Pennsylvania railroad, died at his home in Duncansville this morning at 10.15 o'clock, death following a stroke of paralysis suffered on Wednesday. While Mr. Treese had not been in the best of health for some time, he was able to be about until this week and it was on the Fourth of July that he and his wife observed their golden wedding. He was the son of John and Barbara Treese and was born at Springfield Furnace on March 15, 1851, and was one of a family of thirteen children, of whom but two survive, Mrs. Matilda Gorsuch, aged 77, of Clappertown, and Charles Treese, aged 85, who resides with Calvin Rhodes at Clappertown. On Independence day, 1881, he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah A. Kephart of West Loop. Six children were born to this union, all of whom are living. They are Mrs. Blanche McCready, Mrs. George Pope of Hollidaysburg; Mrs. Gladys Tarr of Patton, Robert of Ebensburg, Clair of Hollidaysburg and Lester of Chrystal, Tex.. There are 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. For more than 40 years, Mr. Treese had been a resident of Duncansville. At about the time of his marriage he was employed as a trackman by the Pennsylvania railroad and later became a track foreman. After a time his eyesight failed and he was made a lampman. Being made foreman necessitated his moving to Williamsburg for a period of three years, when he returned to Duncansville. He was retired at the age of 70 and had devoted his time since to his home and garden, reading and church work. He was a member of the Duncansville Lutheran church for many years and took a keen interest in the work of the church and of the community where he lived.
Altoona Mirror – 8/8/1931
In the obituary appearing in Friday's Altoona Mirror, a brother, Charles Treese, was listed among the survivors. This was in error, the brother preceding him to the grave only a few months ago. Mr. Treese was twice married and a son, Arly Treese of Clappertown, to his first union was omitted from the list of surviving children. A son, Lester, is now located in Indiana and efforts are being made to get in touch with him to inform him of his father's demise.
