Mrs. Carruth.

Mrs. Katherine Carruth, long-time Palo Alto resident and widow of a Stanford professor, died Wednesday in a Santa Cruz convalescent hospital. She was 86.

Mrs. Carruth had been in the hospital for the past three years. She previously had lived in Palo Alto.

She was the widow of William Herbert Carruth, professor of comparative literature and English. He had died in 1924.

Mrs. Carruth was a native of Tescott, Kan.

She had planned to become a concert pianist, and practiced 8 to 10 hours daily, but turned to teaching when it became necessary to bolster the family income.

She helped put her two brothers and four younger sisters through college.

She met her husband, then vice chancellor of the University of Kansas, while living in Lawrence, Kan., where the university is located.

Mrs. Carruth is survivied by one daughter, Mrs. Katherine Grover of Aptos, CA; and by four sisters, Mrs. Charlotte Morton of Carmel, Mrs. Edgar Johnston of Ann Arbor, Mich., Mrs. W. L. Burdick of Sacramento and Mrs. Donald Alford of San Carlos.

There will be no funeral services."
