Herman Schmitz was born September 5, 1891 in the Foxholm, North Dakota area. He was the 2nd of 12 children born to Bernard and Eleanora (Hoerter) Schmitz. He grew up and farmed in the Foxholm area for a number of years before moving to Kenmare, North Dakota. He married Gertrude Keller on June 4, 1918 at Saint Henry's church near Foxholm. He had lived in Custer, South Dakota for the last 10 years.
