Mass of Christian burial will be 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 13, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Reverend Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with music and time of sharing at 7:00 p.m.
Visitation will resume one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Friday.
Pallbearers are John Erickson, Chad Erickson, Christopher Schmitz, Eric Schmitz, Lee Schmitz, and William Osinski.
William was born February 26, 1923, in Foxholm, North Dakota, to Herman and Gertrude (Keller) Schmitz. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army in the Phillipines. He worked for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service for over 30 years, retiring in 1979.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice "Betty" Schmitz; son Alan (Dana) Schmitz; three daughters, Ruth (Fred) Koehler, Jean (Chris) Erickson, and Gail Schmitz; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two brothers, Bernard and David; and two sisters, Carol and Adeline.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Leo and Alvin.
