Son of Hector McNeill (1820-1899) and his first wife Sarah "Sallie" Brown (1823-1868).
Lewis married Sallie Covington about 1885. They became the parents of eight children, of which three died prior to the 1900 US Federal Census.
The five surviving children were:
Alvin Lewis McNeill, Sr. (1888-1938)
Sallie Mae McNeill Webb (1889-1932)
Lewis Samuel "Sam" McNeill (1891-1964)
Crawford McNeill (1902-1969)
Julia C. McNeill Gibson* Manchester Sinclair (1905-1986)
* Youngest child Julia was raised by her maternal aunt and uncle, Susan P. Covington and William Wesley Gibson. She took the name Gibson by 1920.
