Sylvester Hardman was the oldest child of George W. and Rachel (Goff) Hardman. He was born August 22, 1836 in Lewis County, Virginia (later Calhoun County, West Virginia). On March 20, 1872, he married Martha Crow, the daughter of George and Susannah (Horton) Crow. They raised four children in Roane County, West Virginia, where Sylvester died on December 12, 1905. He was buried in the Hardman Cemetery on his parents farm at Hardman Bend in Calhoun County.

History of Roane County (1927), pp. 538 and 539:
[Four sons of George W. and Rachel (Goff) Hardman, of Lewis County, later Gilmer County, later Calhoun County, West Virginia, made their homes in Roane County; their names: Sylvester, Casset C , George, Columbus and Orlando. The last named two settled in Reedy District (which see) ; the first named two, about 1867, settled and improved large farms in Curtis District. George went to Calhoun County. There were thirteen children in all.
Sylvester Hardman son of George W. and Rachel, was born in Gilmer County, August 22, 1836; married Martha, daughter of George and Susan (Horton) Crow, in Jackson County, West Virginia, on March 20, 1872. George Crow was born in Green County, Pennsylvania, and Susanna Horton was born in County Queen, Ireland; commenced their wedded life together in Monroe County, Ohio, where Martha was born, January 15, 1844. They came to Jackson County, West Virginia, when Martha was three years old, 1847. [(II) Sylvester, son of George Washington and Rachel (Goff) Hardman, was born in Calhoun county, West Virginia, August 22, 1836. He was a farmer and breeder of cattle, and an extensive dealer in timber. At the outbreak of the civil war he was drafted into the Federal army but did not see active service. He was a member of the West Virginia state senate in 1893 and 1895. He married, March 20, 1872, Martha, daughter of George and Susanna (Horton) Crow, born January 15, 1844, in Monroe county, Ohio. Her father was born March 26. 1804, in Greene county, Pennsylvania, and died in 1900. He was a son of Martin and Elizabeth (Cackler) Crow, and in 1832 removed to Illinois, near Chicago, which he described as a "small village with two taverns." He later removed to Jackson county, Virginia, and became prominent in politics, being twice elected to the Legislature at Richmond. He served in the Confederate army, until being wounded, and after leaving the hospital he purchased cattle for the Confederate government until general amnesty had been granted by President Lincoln. After the war he was elected to the West Virginia state legislature at Charleston. His wife, Susanna, was the daughter of Moses Horton who was born in Dublin, Ireland, and their children were Michael; Dorinda; William, who served as captain of Company B, Twenty-second Virginia Infantry, in the Confederate army, during the civil war; Jane; Martha, referred to above; George B., for eighteen years county clerk of Jackson county; Charles Horton. His birth was in that part of Lewis county, Virginia, now included in Gilmer county, West Virginia, and when he was about six years of age his parents removed to their present home, in what is now Calhoun county, West Virginia. In Jackson county, West Virginia, March 20, 1872, Sylvester Hardman wedded Martha, daughter of George and Susannah (Horton) Crow. She was born in Monroe county, Ohio, January 15, 1844, and was three years old when her parents settled in Jackson county.
