Marcellus Hardman was the seventh child of George W. and Rachel (Goff) Hardman, born on March 30, 1848 at Hardman Bend in Gilmer County, Virginia (later Calhoun County, West Virginia). He married Chantilla Malvern Stump, the daughter of Alfred and Lucetta (Robinson) Stump, on December 6, 1881 in Calhoun County. Marcellus and Chantilla had one son, Paul Hardman. Chantilla died November 19, 1905. Marcellus remarried on June 7, 1911 in Braxton County, West Virginia to Maggie P. Newlon. Marcellus died on August 17, 1932 and was buried in the family cemetery at Hardman Bend, Calhoun County.
