Earnest Andrew Hilton was my grandfather. His parents were Joseph Samuel Hilton and Loretta (Corbett) Hilton who are buried in the Highland cemetery in Wichita Kansas. His paternal grandparents were James Andrew Hilton and Frances (Spurgeon)Hilton who came to Jasper County, Vandalia,Iowa from Sullivan County Tennessee. His maternal grandparents were John Nickell Corbett and Rebecca (Beam) Corbett. Earnest's father was killed in Wichita Kansas in 1905 when a Frisco Switch engine hit his buggy and he was thrown onto the tracks. My grandfather was ninteen years old at the time. Earnest married Katherine Hazel Blakeman on her 16th birthday, July 17, 1906, in Wichita Kansas. They had two sons, Francis Nathaniel Hilton and my father, James Sylvester Hilton. They raised a girl named Margaret Briggs but were never allowed to adopt her by her birth parents. Earnest was a well known plastering contractor in the Merced area. He was one of the plasterers who plastered the original interior of the recently renovated old Merced Theater.
