Captain William Armstrong, born in Cumberland, England, immigrated to the United States in 1817. In 1824 settled in Markham on Lot 10 Concession 8. In 1833 he married Esther daughter of Peter Reesor and Ester Eby at Thornhill and together they raised seven children. For many years he kept the Wellington Hotel, farmed and participated in agricultural exhibitions. He also held a captain's commission in the militia and was a member of the English Church.
