Reason Trenary Allen, one of the pioneer residents of this city, died at his home 974 Twenty-third Street [Des Moines], yesterday morning [September 4, 1907] at 10 o’clock after an illness of several weeks. He was 82 years of age.
Mr. Allen came to this state about 1852 from Ohio, coming direct to Fort Des Moines, where he was married to Miss Caroline Andersson [on February 20, 1856]. He joined the first volunteer fire department in the history of the city and for many years was one of the leading fire fighters. Later he resigned from the department and entered into the roofing business, which he followed almost to his death.
His mother Mrs. Aquilla Allen was a native of Virginia and had four brothers killed in the revolutionary war. His father was a native of Pennsylvania and came from that state to Ohio.
He is survived by his wife and three daughters, all married, and a son. They are Sarah, wife of Robert Turner, 1134 Twenty-fifth Street; Mary, wife of August Arenburg, 964 Twenty-fifth Street; Rose, wife of William White, 1056 Fifth Street; and Frank B. Allen of Salt Lake City. The funeral will be held from the home tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Interment at Woodland Cemetery.
