Son of Charles Augustus Underhill (1794-1879) and Portia Maria (Brooks) Underhill (1806-1850), his second wife. He is the eldest of five children, who moved to Bath, Steuben County, NY on 17 March 1845 to apprentice in the bookbinding and printer's shop of his first cousin, Robert Lispenard Underhill (1811-1889). He married Charlotte Louisa McBeath on 2 May 1851 in St. Thomas Episcopal Church, issued the weekly newspaper, The Steuben American on 1 January 1856. He then purchased the Steuben Farmer's Advocate in August 1860. He purchased a home on 13 November 1862 next door to William Walter Allen. The daughter of W.W. Allen later married the son of A.L.Underhill. In 1884 he was a Presidential Elector in NYS for Grover Cleveland, Democrat. In 1886 he was appointed Postmaster in Bath, an office he served for four years. In March 1891 he was elected the President of the Village of Bath, for a term of one year. In September 1899, with his son, Edwin Stewart Underhill, he purchased the Corning Democrat newspaper. He died unexpectedly in Los Angeles, CA after a cross-country train excursion during the winter of 1902. He is buried in Grove Cemetery in the Underhill plot which he had purchased on 7 June 1883 for $60.00.
