MARGARET ELAINE NICHOLS
Margaret Elaine Nichols, age 85, daughter of Harry William Marks and Margaret Angelia (Fluckey) Marks, was born in Marion, Iowa Feb. 14, 1918 and passed away Jan. 2, 2004 in Chariton, Iowa. She was baptized at the Methodist Church in Marion in June of 1918.
Elaine spent her early life in Humeston, Iowa and attended the Humeston schools, graduating with the class of 1935. She loved music and played piano for all school events during her high school years, and she was also the pianist for the Humeston Methodist Church for six years. She worked as a telephone operator until leaving Humeston.
Elaine was married to Lowell Howard Baughman Feb. 14, 1937 at Gallatin, Mo. To this union was born two daughters; Patricia Jean and Sheryl Diane.
On Nov. 28, 1948 she was united in marriage to Ted Miller of Chariton. They owned and operated the Case Machinery business and a motel business. Ted passed away on Nov. 17, 1965.
On Aug. 6, 1970 Elaine and Joe Nichols were married in the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. Joe's daughter Kim came to live with them at the age of eight.
Elaine was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Circle; a member of the Lucas County Hospital Auxiliary; the Humeston Alumni Association; a Charter Member and Past President of the Eagles Auxiliary # 2774; and a volunteer for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
Before retiring she worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for Bob Stone Cordage and as a secretary at L&K Insurance Company in Chariton.
She enjoyed being outdoors, working with flowers and relaxing on her patio. She took pleasure in serving as a Senior Citizen Volunteer delivering meals and playing bingo with those at Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center. Elaine was always happy to see familiar faces each day at lunch at the Senior Center and visiting with friends. Her love of music resulted in taking organ lessons over the last few years. Her greatest joy was during the holidays and having all her family around her.
Preceding her in death were her parents, grandson Merlin Lee Wallace, a brother Harold Marks and husbands Lowell and Ted.
Elaine is survived by her husband Joe Nichols of Chariton and his daughter, Kim Cummins and husband Rich of Mitchellville; sister Patricia Coffey and husband, M. D. of Hot Springs, Ark.; daughter Patricia Wallace and husband Warren of Chariton; and daughter Diane DeBok of Des Moines; grandchildren: Carolyn Elam of Chariton; Brad DeBok and wife Shari of O'Fallon, Mo.; Darrin DeBok and wife Jill of Olathe, Kans.; Zachary Vestal and Alexis Vestal of Mitchellville. Three great granddaughters; Taylor and Allyson DeBok and Hannah DeBok, as well as many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004 at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton with Rev. Tony Pulatie of the First United Methodist Church conducting the services and Colleen Reynolds providing music. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery. A memorial has been established in Elaine's name for the Lucas County Humane Society.
