Author. Ivans was the pen name of Jakob van Schevichaven, the first professional author of Dutch detectives. Studying Law in Amsterdam, Van Schevichaven graduated in 1888, which meant he was able to use the title Mr. Dr., meaning Meester in de Rechten (Master of Laws) Doctor. He founded a life insurance company and wrote books and plays in his spare time. When his company went bankrupt in 1921, he focused on writing full-time. Under the pen name Ivans, he wrote 44 detectives across several series, as well as 10 stand-alone detectives, 3 historical novels and 2 short story collections. The most popular series were those with main characters Geoffrey Gill, May O'Neill and Gerard van Panhuis. Most of the novels in the Geoffrey Gill series have been translated. During World War II, after he had already passed away, his books became immensely popular in the Netherlands. Ivans' death also paved the way for Havank, another Dutch author.
