Joe J Summers was born on December 23, 1894, in Mitchellville, Sumner County, Tennessee, the son of Elisha Thomas Summers (1867–1958) and Mary Jane (Conquest) Summers (1875–1941).

He was married on August 16, 1912 in Robertson County as the 1st husband of Alice Honeycutt Summers (1897–1986).

Joe was a painter and carpenter in the house building industry and was living at 2802 Felicia Avenue in Nashville, Davidson County. He was 37 years old and married when he had a cerebral hemorrhage and died on June 7, 1932 at a local hospital.

Survivors included his widow Mrs Alice Summers, children Ida Summers, Woodrow Summers and Richard Summers, all in Nashville, his parents Mr & Mrs E T Summers of Mitchellville and siblings Swany and Ernest Summers of Nashville, Roscoe and Linnie Summers and Mrs Flossie Chandler at Mitchellville and Mrs Lena Brumitt in Gallatin, Tennessee.

Funeral Services were held on June 9th, and burial was in Mitchellville General Baptist Cemetery.
