Elizabeth was the daughter of Richard Mitchell (1710-1749) and Elizabeth Williams (1711-1774).

Elizabeth was ten years old when her father died in 1749.

Gregory Barnes was twenty-four and Elizabeth Mitchell was nineteen when they married on November 30, 1758 in Harford County, Maryland.

The 1790 census revealed they were living in Harford County. Household members: three males (over 16); Gregory Sr., Richard and Farmer and five females; Elizabeth, Daughter, Arabella (15), Eliza (12), and Ann (8). His sons, Ford, Gregory Jr and Richard lived next door in a row.

The 1800 census revealed they were living in District 2, Harford County. Household members: one male (under 10), one male (26-44), Gregory Sr. (45 & up), two females (16-25) and Elizabeth (45 & up). His son, Gregory Jr lived on the left and son, Richard lived two doors on the right.

They had been married fifty years when Gregory died on Mar 26, 1808 in Harford County, Maryland.

Gregory deeded his land for the Barnes and Bailey Family Burying Ground in 1807 and he, at age 74 was the first of the Barnes to be buried there in 1808. Later the name of the cemetery was changed to Bayview Cemetery.

The 1820 census revealed Elizabeth was living with her son, Gregory and family. Household members: Elizabeth (45 & up), one male (under 10), one male (10-15), one male (16-25), Gregory Jr. (45 & up), Mary (under 10), two females (10-15), two females (16-25) and Elizabeth (26-44).

Elizabeth lived to age 92.
