Biographical Sketch
"Shelby County, Indiana History", page 684.

"Elisha M. Arnold was born in Campbell County, Ky., May 10, 1810... He passed his early life on a farm in Campbell County. He lived with his parents until he was married, March 8, 1835 to Miss Margaret Powell, who came to Shelby County with her parents, Abraham and Elizabeth Powell. Soon after his marriage Mr. Arnold rented a small farm, and three years later, he purchased his present home. He served an apprenticeship at the mason trade, which he worked at many years. He made a success of life and was at one time the heaviest tax-payer in the county. He is the father of ten children: Mary, Eliza, Ripley, Bennet W., Ferris, Laura, Fanny, James and E. Madison. Eliza died at age thirty-four years. Mrs. Arnold died July 24, 1863, aged forty-one. Mr. Arnold is an honest, upright man, and although identified with no church has lived a moral, Christian life."

Obituary
"Shelby Democrat", October 24, 1895 edition

"Elisha M. Arnold died at his home seven miles east of town in Liberty Township, at 7:20 p.m., Monday, Oct. 21st, of heart trouble. He was born in Campbell county, Kentucky in 1810 and at the time of his death was eighty five years old. He came to Shelby county in 1836, and settled on the farm on which he died. He was married to Margaret Powell in 1837, who died in 1962 (1862). To them were born ten children, nine of whom are living, five sons and four daughters. Perhaps there was not a better known man in the eastern part of Shelby county than deceased nor one who was more highly esteemed. He was a valued friend of this paper and its publisher. Elisha M. Arnold passed away full of years and of honors. He was a fine type of the old-style gentleman, courtesy and kindness- the kind of a grand old man who, like our grand old forest trees, the world is losing without growing like ones to take their places. Funeral services were held at the late residence at two o'clock p.m., Wednesday, Rev. John Clouds officiating. Interment in the Powell graveyard. Cummins & Edwards had charge of the funeral."
