Mary was the daughter of Eli Trent and Mary "Polly" Ellis. She married Alexander Stafford on 10/21/1879 in Wayne County, West Virginia, at her parents' home. Sadly, she died the following year. She and Alex lived at Gilbert.

Alex Stafford's wives, Mary and Loventia, were 2nd cousins (Mary's grandfather, Humphrey Trent, and Loventia's grandfather, Eli Trent, were brothers). Mary's father was also named Eli, a nephew of the older Eli.
