Aetna came with her parents when a small child to Shelby county, Ill., where she grew to womanhood. She was married on October 16. 1864 to Thomas Higgins and to this union were born five children, who with their parents, came to Coffeyville, Kansas, in 1883 where they resided until 1914. At this time, Mrs. Higgins and her husband retired from the farm on account of advancing age and they made there home with a daughter who had lost her husband.

Her husband died at the age of 80 years on January 9, 1917 while visiting with their daughter, Clara, in Moline, and he was laid to rest there.

Oscar the oldest child passed away on January 28, 1920 leaving Walter S. Higgins of Liberal, Kan., Mrs. Clara California of Wichita, Kan., Aaron C. Higgins of Chicago, Mrs. Lina Elmore of Newton and one granddaughter, Mrs. E. A. Gill of Wichita. These were with her and cared for her in her last sickness. Others arriving later were Mrs. J. D. Butler, Agate, Colo., T. E. Higgins of Liberal, Kan.,daughter and son of Walter Higgins and E. A. Gill of Wichita.

Funeral services were conducted September 29 at the home at 406 East Eighth street by Rev. Charles D. Whitwam, pastor of the Methodist church of which the deceased had been a life-long member. By special request of Mrs. Higgins, Mrs. C. N. Parsons sang "Sunset Gate".

A few days before her death, Mrs. Higgins, in her weakened condition tried to sing "How Firm a Foundation," one of her favorite hymns with her daughters, and this was sung as a duet at the funeral services by Mrs. Parsons and Mrs. Linton Smith with Mrs. Charles Bachman at the piano.

The W. R. C. of which she was a member was present in a body ant the impressive ritualistic service of that order was used. In closing Mrs. Parsons and her mother, Mrs. S. T. Berry, sang, "Nearer My God To Thee". The pall bearers were chosen from among the immediate friends and neighbors. They were W. H. von der Heiden, C. B. Deschner, J. D. Williams, S.T. Berry, W. L. D. Hagan and C. N. Parsons.

Many sincere friends and neighbors who had contributed so many loving and kindly deeds to make her declining day in life bright and cherry were presented with their loving assistance and beautiful floral offerings to accompany her to her last resting place, where the remains of her companion, Thomas Higgins, had been transferred from Moline. The bodies were reunited and layed in one grave and all that was left of the mortal body was given back to the hand of God who gave it, and dear ones felt that these two who had led a helpful life and had reached more than the allotted years had gone to a peaceful rest.
