Writer, editor. An influential member of the Young America Movement (a name he coined), Mathews was one of the major voices for the need to establish distinctly American literature in the 19th century. He also was a strong advocate for international copyright at a time when book piracy was rampant. He was an editor of various journals, including the New-Yorker and Arcturus, a journal which he founded with Evert Augustus Duyckinck. He also wrote several books of poetry and novels, including one called Behemoth which likely inspired Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.
