"Jack" John Gardner Briery (J.G. Briery) was son of Thomas Briery and 1/w Nancy Towne of Gardiner, Kennebec Co., Maine. Middle name "Gardner" for his father's mother's maiden name. His grandparents: Thomas Brieryhurst and Susanna Gardner of Maine.
Obituaries have different ages of birth than tombstone.
1850 Census in Maine has him 21 yrs old making him born in 1829.
According to son "Watt" Warren Stephen Briery his father ran away and joined the Navy at age 14 years for 3 years, then on a whaler for 4 years. Went with his brother-in-law Clem Osgood to the California Gold Rush, didn't have much luck mining but found a good sized nugget and had it made into ring for Sarah..

MEXICAN WAR SERVICE:
Military Record: Enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy on the ships "Franklin" and "Decatur" from November 29, 1847, to December 5, 1849.
John G. Briery married 17 July 1852 Maine to Sarah Elmyra Osgood (1831-1900).
After husband's death she moved to Converse, Sabine Parish., Louisana
with two of her son's Abraham Lincoln Briery and Osgood Briery "Oz".
She lived with son Osgood Briery and family in Converse, Sabine Parish, Louisiana.
John G. Briery family moved in the Fall of 1870 to Osborne County, Kansas Twin Creek area. Many hostile Indians in that area during that time frame. He was the Postmaster for 19 years at Twin Creek, Winfield Twp. Osborne Co., Kansas.
