Dr. Carl Read Funeral Held Here Wednesday

The last rites for Dr. Carl Read Sr. were held at the First Methodist Church in Bridgeport Wednesday, September 20, at 4 p.m. The Pastor, Rev. Roy L. Patton, a longtime friend of the family, assisted by Dr. J. L. Ward of Decatur, another friend of the family of long standing, officiating. After the impressive ceremonies his remains were buried in the East Bridgeport cemetery.

Dr. Read was one of the best known and best loved men of the entire community. He was closely associated with many in his profession of dentistry and in this chosen occupation he was always kind and sympathetic in his efforts to alleviate suffering, and it was truthfully said of him that he never tired of doing good. He was charitable and patient in his more than 20 years of practice.

One of the largest congregations ever to assemble on like occasion filled the spacious church to over flowing to listen to the glowing tribute paid to his memory by Rev. Patton. A beautiful floral offering was given by loving friends which filled all available space around the casket, which mutely told of the high esteem he was held by all who knew him. His memory will long live in the minds and hearts of the people he served and loved.

Carl Read, son of James K. and Elizabeth Read, was born at Paradise, Texas, March 20, 1891. He was a graduate of Paradise schools, and soon thereafter he attended the School of Dentistry at Dallas, Baylor, Pre-Med. After his graduation he set up offices in Memphis, Texas with Dr. Floyd Cole, now of Whitesboro, Texas. Two years at Memphis.

In 1917 he went into the U.S. Army and was stationed at Del Rio, Texas, and was given the rank of Captain. Dec. 30, 1918, he was married to Miss Ruth Pierson and to this union were born two children, the first passing in infancy, the only child is Caption Carl Read Jr.

Dr. Read and his family moved to Bridgeport in 1922 where he continued his profession of dentistry until last February when he had to give up his work.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Read, and son, Capt. Carl Read of the U.S. Army; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Freeland, Forrestburg, Texas; Mrs. Ruth Cole, Whitesboro, Texas; four brothers; W. N., J. B. and T. P. Read, of Paradise, Texas, Harry Read of Nocona, Texas; a number of nieces and nephews and many friends over the state.

He has been a faithful and helpful church worker all his life from the time he came into the church at the early age of eight. He was Sunday school superintendent, steward, teacher, president of the Lions club, mayor, director in First National Bank and served on the local school board and with the county school board of education for many years. He was very active with the boy scouts and was always interested in the welfare of the youth of our town and community.
