(née Harriet Carlin)

First Profession July 30, 1943
Motherhouse
St. Louis, Missouri

The oldest of four children was born to Rose (Hoenig) and Harry Carlin on March 30, 1921, in Davenport, IA. On April 10, 1921, she was baptized at St. Paul, Davenport, IA, and received the name Harriet Elizabeth after her father and two grandmothers. Later, a sister and two brothers were born into the Carlin family.

At the age of four, the family moved to Fort Madison and she entered Kindergarten at Jefferson School. Several months later, the family moved back to Davenport and she entered Madison School and later was placed in St. Paul's School. Shortly after her First Communion at the age of seven, the family moved again to Fort Madison. She completed her elementary grades at Sacred Heart School and graduated from Catholic Central High School in Fort Madison.

In the second grade, Harriet felt the call to become a sister. When she was older, she fought against the idea, but a visit to Ripa in her junior year of high school helped her to make a decision. She entered the candidature on August 30, 1939. During her third year of candidature, she taught music at the motherhouse and two days a week at Our Lady of Sorrows. She was received into the novitiate on July 29, 1942, and given the name Marie Cecile. She professed first vows on July 30, 1943, and final vows on July 30, 1949.

Sister Marie Cecile was a music and elementary teacher for 41 years. In Missouri, she taught at: Holy Cross, Cuba; St. Francis Borgia, Washington; and Holy Ghost, St. Raphael and St. Dominic Savio in St. Louis. In Illinois, she ministered at St. Mary, Alton, and St. Anthony, Effingham. She spent 30 of these 41 years teaching in California: St. Jude Academy, St. Rita and Holy Family in San Diego; Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Indio; St. Martin, La Mesa; St. Hilary, Pico Rivera; St. Aloysius, Tulare; and St. Helen, Fresno. She was principal at Santa Isabel, Los Angeles, for a half year. In the mid-1980s, she gave community service as a driver at the motherhouse. Eeturning to California, she ministered for seven years in religious education at Corpus Christi, Bonita and St. Anthony, National City. For three years, she served in parish ministry at St. John the Evangelist in San Diego.

In November 2003, Sister Marie Cecile suffered a stroke that left her greatly disabled and unable to communicate as she desired. She was missioned to St. John of God Retirement and Care Center, Los Angeles, in December 2003. She died peacefully at St. John of God Retirement Center on December 14, 2007, around 11:30 p.m.

The Rosary and the Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. John of God Retirement Center on December 19, 2007. A memorial Mass was celebrated at the motherhouse on the same day. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery in South San Gabriel, CA.

Sister Marie Cecile was a dedicated, organized teacher who wanted her students of various cultures to learn and succeed. An independent person, she struggled with the challenges of these past four years. Free of all limitations, may she now rejoice in the fullness of eternal life!
