Sister M. Charissima Wambold, SSND
(born Mary Wambold)

First Profession July 28, 1938
Motherhouse
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Mary Wambold was born and spent her childhood near Sun Prairie, WI, with an older brother Edward and a younger sister Irene. They attended Sacred Hearts School in Sun Prairie, where Mary first met the School Sisters of Notre Dame. At 15, she went to live with the sisters to help them, to attend high school, and to become acquainted with their life. At 17, she entered SSND and was received two years later.

After profession, Sister Charissima spent three years at Holy Redeemer School in Madison, WI, followed by ten years at St. Margaret in Chicago, lL. When Sister was transferred to Oshkosh, WI, it was the beginning of 23 years of teaching in various Wisconsin schools.

She came to Visitation, Elm Grove, in the summer of 1974, "taking the place of four elderly Sisters in the dining room." This was only the beginning of her call to "community service." When the sister driver got sick, Sister Charissima did the driving. Since there was no staff to do big cleaning, with the help of a man from St. Mary's, she started on the fifth floor, taking off old wax, scrubbing, sealing the floor, and putting on Perma-Shine. She also took over the window washing, "because the young boys who were doing it, broke too many windows."

Sister Charissima was a veritable super-nun, a one-woman housekeeping department, with bits of interior decorating, maintenance, and transportation thrown in. During the summer, she welcomed help from mission sisters. After a man was hired, she had more time and started sewing and making things for the gift shop.

More and more, these last years, the "presence and prayer" part of her call as a retired sister replaced the "service" part for her. She spent much time in the chapel. The basket of her walker always carried snacks which she gave to anyone who looked hungry. In a way, this loaded walker was the final sign of her big heart, her need to keep giving, even as she continued to be a loving and grateful recipient of the care she now needed.

Father Erwin Matt concelebrated the Mass of Christian Burial with Monsignor Duane Moellenberndt, the present pastor of Sacred Hearts, Sun Prairie.

---------------------------------

Sister Charissima taught schools, primarily in Wisconsin schools with one assignment in Illinois for 10 years. She retired from teaching in 1974 when she moved to Notre Dame of Elm Grove. In retirement, she served as a housekeeper, scheduler and driver and also ministered through her prayers and presence.
