Sister Mhuire McLoughlin, SSND
(née Catherine Patricia McLoughlin)

First Profession July 30 1951
Motherhouse
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Born in 1931 to a father from Ireland and a mother from Wales, Catherine Patricia McLoughlin began her years on a farm near Stevens Point. The devoted McLoughlin parents and three daughters lived "a close family life with its deep Irish Catholicity, customs, folklore and song," as Sister Mhuire described it.

A move to town and St. Stephen parish early in her life motivated Catherine to become a School Sister of Notre Dame. After three years in the Aspiranture at Longwood in Chicago and formation training and vows at the Milwaukee motherhouse, Catherine, who now bore the Gaelic name for Mary, began her life's work.

With degrees in English from Mount Mary College and Marquette University, Sister Mhuire began her teaching career. Elementary and high school teaching in Upper Michigan and Wisconsin claimed her early years. Later her instructional gifts were shared with students in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Ohio. After years in the classroom she felt called to tum her talents to other ways of sharing the Gospel.

Sister Mhuire's long-standing desire to be a missionary found its answer in two years of teaching seminarians in Tanzania and another year teaching English in a girls' school there. Earlier training as a licensed practical nurse served her well in Africa. Mission interest again drew her when the province was about to open the Alaskan missions. More mission activity became hers when she took on catechetical work for the Glenmary Sisters.

From this point on, diversity marked sister's life. She assumed small but important roles in the Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin: pastoral associate, director of religious education, administrator, resource person, nurse.

Sister Mhuire took on a significant task in the Milwaukee province when she was elected coordinator of the Green Bay area. This called for her being in touch with all the sisters in missions under her jurisdiction. She was a likeable administrator, ready to "defend to the teeth" any sister in trouble. After one public set-to in a parish, a gentleman came up to her with the words, "Sister you'd make a good lawyer."

Sister Mhuire was not one to waste apostolic opportunities. For the residents at the Antigo Fireside Apartments where she retired, she provided Eucharistic and Rosary services.

This sister who lived simply and died simply, was buried from her church of baptism, St. Stephen, Stevens Point.
