Married in Virginia in 1822, where their first two children, Louisa and Harrison, were born. The family moved to Hancock County, Indiana about 1826. Samuel patented 80 acres of land in Section 34 of Jackson Township, and an additional 80 acres in 1830. Wiley, Elizabeth, James, Agnes Jane, John, and Marinda were born while the family lived in Indiana. In the late 1830s, the family moved again, to Rives County, Missouri, where son Samuel was born in 1839. The family is enumerated in Big Creek Township in the 1840 census.

Samuel patented 80 acres of land in section 36 of Big Creek Township in 1843 and patented an additional 110 acres in Section 2 and 160 acres in section 12 of Honey Creek Township. Two of Samuel's sons, Harrison and Wiley, married daughters of George Gillett, and Samuel and Lurana are buried in the Gillett Cemetery.
