John F. Kraus Dies At Warren Hospital

John F. Kraus, for the past ten years or more engaged in farming in Augsburg township, died at the Warren Hospital at 10:25 A.M. on Monday, following a brief illness the seriousness of which was not realized until his removal to the hospital ten days ago. Two operations were performed following his arrival there to remove the menace of a double hernia, and altho [sic] his condition appeared grave for a few days thereafter, he then rallied sufficiently [sic] so that his ultimate and complete recovery was held probable. Sunday, however, a relapse occurred and physicians stated that the end was not far distant. Relatives were then summoned to his bedside, and extreme unction was administered by Rev. Fr. Merth prior to his peaceful passing on Monday.

John F. Kraus was born at Stacyville, Iowa, July 18, 1885, and was educated in the public schools of that city, where he grew to strong young manhood the early years of which were spent in farming. In May, 1912, he was married to Miss Agatha Heuman of Stacyville, and the following spring moved to this city and engaged in farming in the Town of Augsburg, where the family has since resided.

While his life in the open gave Mr. Kraus a superb physique, his strength was not alone physical but was evident also in his rugged characteristics of mind and heart. As a son, a husband and father, he accepted the fullness of his responsibilities with a willingness and an unswerving devotion that brought him the warm friendship and admiration of everyone in his community.
His loyalty to home and family, to friends and neighbors, marked him a man among men, a fact which was readily apparent at the funeral service held from St. Stephen's Church on Wednesday, when a great throng of sorrowing friends gathered to pay their last respects to the departed. Rev. Merth conducted the funeral mass, and interment was made at St. Stephen's cemetery East of Stephen.

Mr. Kraus is survived by his wife and three children, Gertrude, Robert and John; his mother, Mrs. H.Kraus; a brother, Joe P., and five sisters, Mrs. H. Halfman, Katherine and Mary of this city, Mrs. P.A. Turgeon of Osseo, Minn., and Mrs. J.O. Mullen of Portland, Oregon."
