Lodewijk was a soldier and distinguished himself for the first time in 1629 at the siege of Den Bosch. In 1632 he became a colonel, in 1643 Major General and Governor of Bergen op Zoom, in 1658 Governor of Den Bosch. In 1660 he was sent as a special embassador to England.
He liked to amuse his princely relatives at The Hague and seems to have once entered a party on a dromedary.
