The site of the accident leading to the death of Marjory Bruce Stewart on 2nd of March 1316 -
a cairn at the junction of Dundonald Road and Renfrew Road, approximately one mile to the north of Paisley Abbey, marks the spot where Marjory reputedly fell from her horse. Heavily pregnant at the time, she was taken to and died at the Abbey infirmary, though her unborn child was saved. That first and only child of Marjory Bruce and her husband, Walter Stewart, went on to become Robert II, the first Scottish King of the House of Stewart (later "Stuarts"), who were to rule Scotland until 1689. Marjory was daughter of Robert Bruce, King Robert I of Scotland, and his first wife Isabel.
