Sister M. Julie Billiart Killebrew, SSND
(née Ethel Margaret Killebrew)

First Profession August 19, 1937
Motherhouse
St. Louis, Missouri

The ninth child of Aurelia (née Erlinger) and William Killebrew entered this world on December 26, 1917, in St. Louis, Mo. On February 17, 1918, she was baptized at St. Edward Church and named Ethel Margaret. Her father died when she was 7 years old. Her widowed mother provided for the family of five girls and four boys.

Ethel began kindergarten at Stix School and remained there until the death of her father. Then she was enrolled at St. Louis Cathedral School where she was taught by the Sisters of St. Joseph. She entered Rosati-Kain High School and came in contact with the School Sisters of Notre Dame. She was attracted to both congregations and unsettled as to which she felt called to enter. The solid religious character and spirit of joy of the SSNDs appealed to her and finally Ethel asked her mother's permission to enter. Five days later, she became a candidate on August 29, 1934. After two years of candidature, she was received into the novitiate and given the name Mary Julie Billiart. Profession of first vows was on August 19, 1937, and final vows on August 19, 1943.

Sister Julie taught elementary students for 11 years at St. Mary, Alton, Ill.; St. Joseph, Cairo, Ill.; Holy Angels, East St. Louis, Ill.; and Our Lady of Sorrows, St. Louis. She taught secondary students for seven years at Our Lady of Good Counsel, New Orleans, La.; St. Anthony, Baton Rouge, La.; and Duchesne High School, St. Charles, Mo.

While studying for a master's degree in library science, she was assigned as librarian to Rosati-Kain High School. She also ministered as librarian at Notre Dame High School, Quincy, Ill.; Rosary High School, St. Louis; and Mount Mary College, Milwaukee, Wis. For two years, she assisted various elementary schools of the St. Louis Province in setting up their libraries. She then became an assistant librarian at Notre Dame High School, St. Louis. She held this position for 24 years.

During these years, she held various offices in the Greater St. Louis Chapter of the Catholic Library Association and was a member of the national advisory board. She stated, "Perhaps the best moments of a librarian's day are those when exactly the right book is placed into the hands of the right person." After 42 years as a librarian, she performed community service at the motherhouse for four years.

She retired at Veronica House in 2001. In July 2003, she was transferred to Anna House. Sister Julie died unexpectedly around 10 p.m. on November 7, 2009, at Anna House. In her quiet and gentle way, she was alone when she went home to God.

A wake/vigil was held at Anna House and the motherhouse on November 10, 2009. Th e Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated the following morning with Rev. Joseph Uvietta, SM, and Rev. Charles Deister presiding. Burial was in the motherhouse cemetery. Her parents and siblings preceded her in death. Relatives, former students, co-workers, friends and SSNDs attended the funeral services.

Sister Julie's welcoming smile greeted students in the classroom and library, community members and all those who cared for her as her health deteriorated. In addition to her teaching and library ministry, Sister Julie was an artist. She enjoyed calligraphy and painting scenes with watercolors and oil. She used this skill to create greeting cards and liven up bulletin boards. Her interests also included reading, singing and reciting poetry. May Sister Julie now rejoice in the beauty of eternal life and the reward God has prepared for her!
