He attended Red Top and Orienta schools. He played in many bands including the Herb Nickel Band.

He married Anna Plummer April 30, 1938, in Fairview.

He worked as a blacksmith and welder for more than 40 years. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Carmen.

He married Florence Behm Dec. 22, 1984 in Carmen. He was living at Farivew Fellowship Home at the time of his death.

Surviving is one son, Willard B. Nickel of Newport, N.C.; one stepdaughter Mary Inez Hoffman of Carmen; three brothers, Herb Nickel of Ringwood, Dean Nickel of Enid and Eldon Nickel of McWillie; two sisters, Marjorie Brewton of Yukon and Ruby Becker of Enid; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

In addition to both wives, Anna and Florence, he was preceded in death by one grandson, one brother and one sister. One son followed him in death.
