On May 17, 1931, he married Jennabel "Jennie" Braginton, also of Vinton. They were the parents of two children, Joyce and Stephen.
While serving during WWII, Private Byron Abernathy was seriously injured while fighting in Germany. He spent several months in the hospital. Upon recuperation, he was issued a Line-of-Duty Medical Release from the U.S. Army.
Byron owned and operated Abernathy Grocery Store in Vinton. His son took over management of the store after Byron's retirement.
