The son of James & Sarah (Elston) Ensign, he married (1) Mehitabel Gunn on Oct. 22, 1663. They were divorced and she married Isaac Sheldon (his second wife), and David Ensign married (2) Sarah Wilcox who was possibly divorced from Thomas Long.
David's children by his first marriage:

He was a chimney-viewer in 1666, surveyor of highways in 1669, and was on the list of freemen of Hartford on Oct, 1669.
David was also a farmer and a miller, and being prominent in community & church affairs, was chosen as grand-juryman. He was one of the first settlers of West Hartford.
