My thanks to both Dann and to Frank J. Leskovitz for setting up this Memorial, recording the gravestone information and taking the great photos. I have my own set of photos as you will note below & on the photo page. I have visited this cemetery every summer for several years. It took me several visits before I found the grave of my ancestor Joseph BARNES Jr. If I had only known about FindAGrave sooner.

Joseph BARNES Jr. is my maternal Great, Great, Great Grandfather. He was born 02 May 1751 in East Hampton, Long Island, NY to Joseph BARNES SR. (b.17 Dec 1726 & d.13 Feb 1813) and Hannah STOWE (b.08 May 1726 & d.05 Oct 1812). Joseph Jr. was the second of ten children & was the oldest male. He died 24 March 1819 as shown clearly on the grave stone. He m.Sybil BUCK (b.08 May 1753 & d.04 Mar 1836) and they produced six children named Joseph b.31 Jan 1779, Aaron b.16 Mar 1781, David b.06 Nov 1783 & d.1850, Pitkin b.04 July 1786 & d.28 Feb 1870 in TX, Naaman b.12 Nov 1788 & d.31 Mar 1837 or 15 Mar 1838 and Hider R. (Hyder) b.12 Oct 1791.

I am descended from their fourth child Pitkin (See Memorial # 95403959), who m.Katherine KENNARD (d.1845). Joseph Sr. was a Captain & Joseph Jr. was a Private in the MA Militia and fought in several battles in the Revolutionary War including the battle of Bennington, VT. I have joined the SAR through these ancestors and my mother & oldest daughter have likewise joined the DAR.

I purchased & arranged for the installation of the SAR plaque next to the grave of Joseph Jr as well as the formal plaque installation ceremony in June 2008. You can see the SAR plaque in the photos & it is holding the American flag. There is also a close up view. This ceremony was beautifully covered by the Pittsfield, MA newspaper, THE BERKSHIRE EAGLE. It was announced the day before & it was covered in a nice article with photos the following day. A beautiful ceremony booklet was created by our daughter Beverly Farris WILLIAMS & is still available. If interested in the booklet, please contact me.

I have much more information on this family including both ancestors & descendants. Unfortunately, thus far we have been unable to locate the grave of Joseph Sr., who also died in Lanesborough, MA. At least two of Joseph Jr.'s children are also buried in this same cemetery: David & Naaman.
