He is my maternal Fourth Great-grandfather.

He fought in the Revolutionary War Battle of Bennington, VT which was one of our early victories. He was activated several other times. There used to be several plaques in the area which listed his & his fellow officer's accomplishments in the war along with their names. Unfortunately, all of the plaques have disappeared. However, the Lanesborough Library has a record of the inscriptions.

Based on his war service record in the MA Militia as well as that of his son Pvt. Joseph BARNES Jr., I was able to join the SAR and my mother & eldest daughter were able to join the DAR.

He was a farmer & we have located his farm property. The house has been expanded & it is difficult to identify the original portions of the home where they lived. We have been unsuccessful in locating his grave. I suspect that he was buried on his farm, but the current owners haven't seen any obvious signs of any graves on their property.

Joseph is the son of William BARNES (b. 17 Jan 1702 & d. 30 Mar 1726) both in East Hampton. Long Island, Suffolk County, NY. William married on 11 Oct 1722 Martha EDWARDS. I haven't found either of these parents yet in FIND A GRAVE.
