Willene McGauley Stokes, 91, of Palatka, passed away Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at the Palatka Health Care Center following a brief illness.

Mrs. Stokes was a native of Atkinson, Ga., and had been a resident of Palatka for the past 60 years, coming from Starke. She was a 60-year member of the Lemon Heights Baptist Church in Palatka (now known as the St. Johns Avenue Baptist Church) where she served in many capacities. In her earlier years she was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing. Her main priorities were her church and her family, and she had given care to different family members over the years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank John Stokes; her parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Gilbert E. and Edna McGauley; one brother, Pvt. Roswell McGauley, U.S. Army; and five sisters, Theo Green, Connie Bagwell, Juanita Hardy, Jeanette Motes and Mary Furnas.

Survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law, Sam and Jeannette Bell McGauley of Welaka, and Jennings and Jean Boggan McGauley of Jacksonville; many nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Masters Funeral Home of Palatka with Pastor Don Burnett officiating. The family will begin receiving friends one hour before service time. In honor and celebration of Miss Willene's life, a video tribute will be shown. Burial will follow in the Palatka Memorial Gardens.
