Charles Warren Butler was born October 21, 1921 in Homer, NY. He was one of five children of Charles Warren Butler and his wife Mabel Irene Yorkey Butler. He was raised in Homer, where his father died in December 1938. Charles remained in Homer until at least July 1942.


Military records indicate that Charles was still single when he enlisted in the Army Air Forces in July 1942. [WWII US Army enlistment for Charles W Butler: Enlisted at Binghamton, lived in Cortland. Birth 1921; Civil Occupation: Unskilled construction occupations, n.e.c.; Education: Grammar School; 68 inches tall, 168 lbs, single.]

After his initial schooling in Tyndall Field, FL, he was transferred to an unidentified duty station in England.

Records indicate that he married his first wife Beauties Marie Carnley Ramirez in 1943 & they subsequently divorced. Per family sources, Charles & Beauties had one child, a son, who died in infancy.


Sometime after 1946, Charles married his second wife, Gloria Marie Merkle, a native of Queens NY. Gloria was the daughter of Gottlieb Frederick Merkle and his wife Emily Crankshaw Merkle.


Charles & Gloria had at least 10 children. They lived in Queens until about 1960, at which time the family moved to upstate NY, settling in Elmira.

Charles worked for many years as an employee of the City of Elmira, NY. He died September 5, 1997, in Elmira, and is buried there with wife Gloria at Woodlawn National Cemetery.
