great-great-grandchild of Christopher
Henry served with Company C - 54th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers in the Civil War. His company was engaged in the Battle of New Market, Virginia, Sunday April 15, 1864 and at Piedmont June 5, 1864. After he returned from the Civil War he married Susan. They settled on the old Stahl homestead of about 20 acres of land about one mile away from the Fritz Church in Brothers Valley. Henry was a blacksmith by trade, however he and his family worked the soil, raising necessary food and livestock to maintain the family. Henry had a love for music. While serving in the Civil War, many of his letters home had verses written on them. It is not known if they were originals. He was an active member of the Fritz Lutheran Church, where he served as Church Treasurer and kept the Church records.
The following information is from Henry's great-grandson, who is the grandson of William Arthur Wahl.
"The Wahl book refers to Henry C. as a blacksmith. According to my paternal grandmother, that was only part of the story. As the book correctly states, they lived on a small farm on which they raised crops and livestock. Henry also had a smithy on the premises. My grandmother's story adds to this her assertion that Henry also worked as a carpenter. She said that Henry built houses and other buildings on farms, and that he worked on larger projects, such as the building of entire towns."
Henry & Susan were the parents of three children.
