The son of John & Catharine (Rhine) Silks, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Buffalo Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 11" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes. His census ages vary from 1834 through 1841.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Petersburg, Lancaster County, September 4, 1861, mustered into federal service at Lancaster September 20 as a private with Co. C, 77th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged at term's end October 11, 1864.

He married Lydia Ann unk. and fathered George Benjamin McClellan (b. @1867), Sarah C. (b. @1870), Mary Jane (b. @1872), Catherine E. (b. @1877), Ellen P. (b. @1880), John W. H. (b. 10/??/81), Charles B. (b. @1884), and Emma Pearl (b. 02/14/91). By 1900, he was married to Catherine unk. Some of the children may be hers.
