Mary Jane "Polly" Houston was the daughter of James Houston and Sarah Kendrick. She married John Cooter, son of Lawrence Cooter and Catherine Abel, on 10 Jun 1837 in Monroe County, Indiana. Around 1873, she and her husband moved to Sumpter Township, Cumberland County, Illinois, where they farmed for a number of years. It was there where her husband, John Cooter, died on 13 Apr 1889; he was buried in the Drummond Cemetery, at Neoga, Cumberland County. "Polly" returned to Monroe County following his death.
