David Cooter was the son of John and Mary Jane "Polly" (Houston) Cooter. In 1858 he migrated from his native Monroe County, Indiana to Champaign County, Illinois where he farmed for many years. It was in Champaign County, Illinois where he met and married his wife, Rebecca Elizabeth Strouss, on December 5, 1861. In 1893, he and his family moved to the area of Webster City, Hamilton County, Iowa where he continued farming. In later years, he and his wife lived in Webster City until he suffered a stroke, about 3 months prior to his death.
