Yates is said to have been a travelling tinsmith for a number of years. Erysipalas, a chronic infection which could easily have been cured in modern times with penicillin, overtook him at an early age and left him with swollen joints his family mistakenly identified as arthritis. The strength required for his trade left him. He took up decorative painting and is listed in North Adams, Massachusetts City Directories of the late 1880s as a "fancy artist".
