Alexander T. Niven died in a shipwreck of the Steamer Arctic near Cape Race, Newfoundland, Canada on September 27, 1854. All of the women and children onboard perished except one young English woman, Mary Brown, who later married William Thompson and moved to nearby Forestburgh, NY.
From a visitor on FAG: "All historical accounts confirm that NO women and children survived the SS Arctic disaster. So the account here of a female survivor is false."
