Griffith Spencer was born March 2, 1835, Loraine County, Ohio. He enlisted in Company A of the 2nd Iowa Calvary, mustered into service September 2, 1861 at Davenport, Iowa; he was probably with his regiment with the Grierson Raid into Mississippi in April 1863. Griffith was a regimental blacksmith. In hospital in Memphis, TN March thru June, on detached service at Fort Pickering, Memphis, Tenn. March 19, 1864, at Germantown, TN he was transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps, and on September 3, 1864 he was mustered out of the army at the end of his term of service at Washington, DC on October 6, 1864. Griffith married his older brother's widow, Jane Jordan Spencer, August 9, 1865, their daughter, Minnie Jane was born. Jane died November 20, 1866. On July 9, 1871 he married Sarah Ann Callis, the family moved north in a covered wagon to Wexford County MI, they moved back to the Milan, MI. area 1874; he died May 28, 1878; buried next to his first wife Jane in Mooreville Cemetery, Morreville, MI.
