William D.M. Lowdermilk was the son of Cannon and Susan Bradford Lowdermilk of Caldwell County, North Carolina. He was married to Evelyn Estes of Caldwell County on 2 April, 1862, probably just after joining the Confederate Army to fight in the American Civil War. His allegiance was to the South, for his family defended states rights. They had no slaves and did not support slavery.

According to NC Troops, he was a drummer / medic. He was captured at Gettysburg but released to fight again. He was injured in the Battle of Cold Harbor during the American Civil War and died of injuries in a hospital in Richmond.

He is probably buried in a mass grave or unmarked grave with other victims of Cold Harbor.
